Charlotte Lit’s New Home is Open!
It’as been nearly three years since Charlotte Lit has had its own home. That changes right now.
Charlotte Lit got its start and found its groove in the late great Midwood International & Cultural Center. The wait for a permanent home—a room of Lit’s own, for all of us—is over: our new Uptown studio is open! Here’s how you become a part of it:
• Come to Open Studio, Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 1m – 1:00 pm.
• Bid in our first-ever silent auction, with more than 25 offerings from Charlotte Lit faculty. [Ended! Thanks to all who bid and congrats to those who found great deals!]
• Make a donation to help us reach the $200,000 we’re spending to make the studio beautiful and welcoming to all.
- Donate by credit card at our donation page.
- Send a check to Charlotte Lit, 601 E 5th Street, Suite 160, Charlotte, NC 28202
- Donate stocks or mutual funds — a win-win: no taxes on any capital gains and tax deductibility on the entire amount. Our securities donation form is here.
- Contribute from your Donor Advised Fund.
Thank you for supporting the literary arts in Charlotte! We’re here for you, and couldn’t do our work without you.

Thanks to wonderful Charlotte Lit supporters Anne and Steve Schmitt, we’re fortunate to have worked with Merriman Schmitt Architects to design a flexible, multi-purpose space that serves all of Charlotte Lit’s community needs. Here’s what Lit’s new space will include:
- 1200 square feet of multi-purpose, re-configurable space for classes, readings, community conversations, socials, open studio, and more!
- The Dannye Romine Powell Poetry Place, a cozy space for reading and writing in Dannye’s honor, thanks to generous earmarked contributions from her friends.
- Central to the entire Charlotte Mecklenburg area—and very easy to get in and out.
- Free parking—and lots of it! More than 90 spaces—or just a short walk from the light rail and streetcar.
- Ground floor access, just inside the building’s front door.
- Nine shared breakout and meeting rooms to accommodate our Labs and other multi-space events.
- A 10-year lease … renewable!
- $37,000 in up-fit allowance … a giant head start toward making the space beautiful and multi-purpose.
Where Your Contribution Goes
We’re creating a beautiful, secure, permanent space for learning, conversation, and community—and this will require a few more dollars than we usually ask for. Here’s where your capital contributions will go:
- Infrastructure: remove and refinish walls; paint and carpet
- Classroom Seating: comfortable chairs and modular tables
- Event Seating: stackable (yet still comfortable) chairs
- Audio/Visual: large display screen; microphones, stands, speakers; recording equipment
- Dannye Powell Poetry Place: reading lights and chairs; bookshelves
